Media Bias

This page discusses the concept of media bias - what it is, what does it mean, how to detect it and more.

What is media bias?

Media bias is a term used to describe bias or prejudice in news and media reports, for example TV news, newspapers, radio stations. Media bias is usually perceived as an imbalanced or unfair presentation of the facts, or a selective reporting of which events or facts are reported. This may relate to the bias of an individual (journalist, producer) or of a media channel (TV station, newspaper).

How to detect media bias?

The basic concept of media bias is reasonably simple, but detecting it is a little more complicated. Bias relates to different people's perceptions - it would be fair to say that "media bias is in the eye of the beholder". So how do you judge if a particular news report or newpaper article is "fair" or "independent" or "balanced"?

A comparison of the way a specific story is reported in different TV/radio stations and newspapers is a useful way to determine if bias exists. Does one report give a noticeably different perspective from the others? If so, there may be a problem of media bias.

It should be remembered that the viewpoint (and the possible biased views) of the reader or viewer may lead them to suspect bias exists where there is none.

Media bias - real or perceived?

Not suprisingly, there is often lively debate on whether occurrences of bias are due to the specific agenda or viewpoint of an institution ("real media bias"), or whether the accusations in fact suggest that the accuser is the one with the problem ("perceived media bias").

This issue becomes especially problematic when the debate centres on particularly sensitive issues, for example the politics of Israel and the Middle East, or the debate over liberal/conservative viewpoints in US TV stations.

Bias - Hot Topics

Not suprisingly, the politics of the Middle East often gives rise to claims of media bias. Media channels may be accused of news reports that are pro-Israel or pro-Arab. Given the huge sensitivities in this area, it can become very difficult to find media reports that are neutral, or that are judged to be neutral by all viewers.

Another hot topic that has been debated for many years is the question of liberal or conservative bias in the US media. Thousands of books, articles and websites exists on this topic (see links below), and the debate still rages as to whether the US media in general shows a particular prejudice, and whether this is particularly apparent from the output of certain TV stations. This leads us onto...

Biassed TV stations?

Certain TV stations have, over the years, attracted persistent claims of bias. In the US, one of the most notorious for this is Fox News. Critics often claim that Fox News shows particular prejudice towards the conservative, right-wing political ideology. See the links below for more information.

In the UK, the BBC has often been accused of biassed reporting. In part, this is is probably due to the dominant role the BBC has in high-quality TV and radio broadcasting. In the 80's and early 90's, the BBC was accused of promoting a left-leaning, anti-conservative viewpoint. In more recent years, it has had some spectacular disagreements with the Labour government, most famously relating to Andrew Gilligan's report on the governments dossier on Iraq's WMDs.

  • Media Bias Basics - another site that appears to be generally about media bias, but focusses on "liberal media bias" in the US.

  • Oh, that liberal media - the title says it all!
